This is our second visits. You will never notice this place if you do not familiar with this area. Lucikly my Sister n Brother in-law who lived in KL bring us to many good food. What we remember their food was tasty. And that was for supper meal.

But ends up it dissapoint us because of their Peak Dinner Hour.

Here comes the Bitter gourd stir fried with glass noodle.

Stir evenly…

A very big different from what we had last trip. Last time we had the same bitter gourd glass noodle was pretty delicious and the glass noodle texture was so nice. And this time, noodle color abit lighter and looks dried, lack of moist. The taste doesnt up to expectation, everage only.

Dai Lok Mee

Did you see the crispy pork lard on top of the noodle?…haha, without the lard aroma, the noodle would go salty if you just take the noodle only.

Hakka stir frying kuih, dunno how to call in english….haha, can anybody tell me? 客家算盘子in chinese. It was splendid for 1st visit, but not this time. Totally different taste, and even the Kuih texture and yam filling is not right. we were like eating bunch of flour and yam together in the mouth. Feel full very fast, and the mood turns down.

Previous visits has the deep fried crunchy dried shrimp fried with thick aromatic sauce and chewy Kuih, its was delicious and flavourfull.

Probably the golden hour affectted the quality. Well, what i can recommend is, go for supper time, around 10pm onward, should be better i think.

We asked the lady worker why the quality so different from lastime, and she said probably is the peak hour. and she mentioned that the Kuih is done by the owner’s son (kuih used to made by owner), new learner…no wonder the kuih qulity were so bad.

Meat Dumpling Yam Cake @ Cintra Street, Penang

Posted by gill gill On May - 24 - 20081 COMMENT

Dumpling Shop at Cintra Street…

The Father handed the business to his son, and become 2nd generation business.

They specialist on X-Large Rice Dumpling. I dont have the Rice Dumpling picture here, and the rice dumpling is used to be good, but not now anymore. The second genetation dumpling is really dissapoint me. The glutinous rice inside the dumpling is too soft and tasteless. Totally OUT!!! So we rather dont eat. Their Red Bean Dessert aint good.

Big tray of Yam Cake…

The Yam Cake is not a special deal, it is tasteless and dont feel like eating yam cake, like eating flour! but the Sweet Sauce would helps alot on it, the sauce is thick, lots of sesami seeds and aromatic.
Totally counldnt compare this with his father’s.

Rating: 1.5 / 5

Price Tag of the foods…

did you notice that they sell RM32 dumpling?! i havent try that before….

So sad to see the old school food destroy by the younger generation. Too bad. Please bring your heart for cooking, dont just simply cook for living!

Moonlight Cafe @ Batu Ferringhi, Penang

Posted by Jason Wong On May - 20 - 20082 COMMENTS

Moonlight Cafe – A Very Special Signage at the entrance, and you will not miss out this roadside Singage while on the way up along the winding road to batu ferringhi. The area name called Moonlight Bay, and currently have 2 new housing developments facing the moonlight cafe right after the miami beach. The Cafe signage lighten up the dark and busy street with cars but without a man walking. The entrance lead you to the long staircase and down to the beach. There are 2 seating areas; selter w seafront and sandy beach without selter. Well, due to the “Green” lighting putting up at the beach area, we uncomfortable with it, so we choosed the seltered area which near to the kitchen.

Moonlight Cafe is a good place for lovers to dine at the relaxing private beach. They are selling Malay’s Food which has usual Malay Chu Char Menu + Ikan and seafood bakar + Western Food.

Charcoal BBQ Sea Cockers…mMmmMMmm…is gill’s flavorites. The Cockers were slidly over cooked and come with the Thai Sweet Chili Sauce for dip. But i’d rather taste the original cocker flavour. The Cockers were freashly grill but its lack of the sea saltyness.

Rating: 2 / 5

Ayam Masak Merah…Erm…the vegatables portion seems more then Ayam. well, what do you expect? is only RM4.50 per plate. Thick and spicy gravy taste quite ok.
Rating: 3 /5

Teluk Dada…well, a simple egg and do it in thousand’s way. Teluk dada is not sunny or bulleye, but its a deep fried egg in large amount of hot oil. It makes a thin crispy outer layer and inner was tender and moist. That simple Teluk Dada was fullfil my desire…GOOD

Rating: 4 / 5 (must try)

Daging Kunyit…the beef full of kunyit flavor but the texture is abit tough, but overall not bad in taste.

Rating: 2.5 / 5

Kangkung Ikan Masin…i have to say this is s must try dishes. A karrif lime play an important rule in this dish. Ikan Masin brings the salty and they use lime to neutralise and added in the soury taste to blend the perfect match! This is the first time we’ve taste the different from the others.

Koay Teow Theng @ Lebuh Clarke, Penang

Posted by gill gill On May - 17 - 20081 COMMENT

This morning we went to Agryl Road to have breakfast after walking our dogs at Gurney Drive. This Koay Teow Theng stall is located just off Agryl Road and the place is called Duck Lane according to the news paper clipping found there.

The food served there are mainly Koay Teow in clear soup or dry, blench bean sprouts or green vege and chicken(used to prepare the soup) in the Lorong.

The Koay Teow Theng is not exceptionally delicious but the side dishes are worth reccomending. The bean sprouts and green vege are cooked just right leaving them still crunchy and juicy, and the pork tendon balls that are made fragrant by the condiments found in them. The chicken may a bit chewy as they are old hens(female chicken) used to prepare the soup for the Koay Teow Theng.

Blench Bean Sprouts with Pork Lard Bits(Chinese Kacang hahaha..)

Koay Teow Theng with the usual fish balls, pork balls and pork tendon balls.

Other than the food, I like to patronise the place is because of the price, the friendliness of the people there and the amount of MSG that is used. Me and my wife had three(3) bowls of Koay Teow, additional Pork Tendon balls, one(1) bowl of pork ball soup, one(1) large plate of bean sprouts and chicken, and it cost me RM 16.40. Is it cheap?! To me it is fair as compared to others that may cost more. As for the case of amount MSG used, after patronising the place it doesn’t make me that thirsty, thus I could say they don’t use high amounts of MSG.

In the inner part of Old Georgetown, lies Jalan Cintra. On this road itself many food wonders and old school food can be found in this area. Old school meaning, traditional taste and methods of cooking and preparing dishes. One of our favourites is the Chee Cheong Fun at Kim Maou Cafe. The Chee Cheong Fun stall used to be outside this cafe , but has since moved into the cafe. The business hour is from 1:30pm onwards until stock finishes.

Kim Maou Cafe on Cintra Street.

Cintra Street Chee Cheong Fun

Cintra Street Chee Cheong Fun

Curry Chicken that is served

The curry chicken that is served with the chee cheong funs is made from traditionally blended herbs and spices, none of the modernised and simplified cooking with curry powders. The chicken meat used is only from thighs and drumsticks. This is to ensure that meat texture does not interfear with smoothness of the chee cheong fun. Another thing about the curry is that it uses a lot of Serai. The serai helps to lighten up an otherwise heavy and oily meal.

Curry Chee Cheong Fun served on plate.

Other than the curry chicken, the stall is also good for its shrimp paste and light soya souce. The shrimp paste is thick and creamy, and it goes well with only sesame seeds. As for the light soya, I think the proprietor has added some additional ingredient in it, cause it taste different from the virgin type light soya sauce that she displays at her stall. The light soya brings out the texture of the chee cheong fun yet it brings out the fragrant of the chee cheong fun (the fun) itself.

Is worth to try this old school food!

Mee Goreng @ Bangkok Lane, Penang

Posted by Jason Wong On May - 16 - 20082 COMMENTS

I think most of the penangite knows this Bangkok Lane Mee Goreng! Famous & Popular Hawker Store who operated by indian’s onwner cum chef…..10 over years…..

Would this picture makes you feel hungry?…haha, it is quite tempting. Long time didnt have chance to makan mee goreng here, and this was the first visit in year 2008. Anyway, we were there for tea break and still have lots mee goreng supporters especially on weekend.
i always believe the taste and quality will be different before and after they get famous. Haa….

Do you know why? famous = more people eat your food, have to serve fast = mass production, so do u think this is the best still…lol

Well, come back to the food. The mee goreng standard doesnt taste as good as lastime, luckily they still kept the flavor, just only lack of some goreng aroma. when comes to peak hour lagi worst, they cooked the few plates of mee in one time, so where can get aroma still? the mee consider tasty still.

Mee Goreng with extra Sotong : RM4.00

The Mee Rebus not bad, can consider to order this while you need to wait for the goreng.

Taste good

Rating: 3.5 / 5

ok, this is the delicious Venison Pan Mee, its same like other Pan Mee, but just that they switch the Pork to Venison Meat. The Venison meat were so tender and strong w venison taste . i will advice you to finish the noodle when its warm, because the venison meat will turns tough an tasteless when its comes to room temperature. It is not advisoble to (“Tar Pau” ) pack it home, coz they will give u raw venison meat n ask u to heat up at home. But this doesnt works well. Dont think this is a simple step just put a raw meat in the hot bowl to reheat pan mee. the taste is totally different from what we had at the coffee shop. haaaa…..

This was the second visits to Setiawan. We came here after Jason’s Family Members who all lived in Pangkor for a Wedding Ceremony. This place was recommended by his auntie who stayed in Setiawan and treat us a good meal.

This place is quite deep in, you need to came in from the setiawan town, and 15min driving and come to this Kampung. You should get a local to bring you there, Cause we also dunno how to go…haaaa. anyway, if you interested to go there, just ask from us, maybe we’ll find the way…

Wow, Meaty Baked Crab…
It was Fresh Fresh Fresh! as you can see in the picture, shape looks tough and in wonderful red color. Pure Bake Method is the best way to taste the fresh crab, you can taste the sweetness and baked aroma from the meats……perfect baked!!

I am fighting with the Crab! Haa
They are not only sell seafood, but Todi too. Todi is kind of natural wine which made by Coconut Flower’s juice. Hey, the Todi has a coconut juice aroma and it is smooth and round. even a kid can drink it too….

Many people didn’t realise there are several place to get Todi in Penang, do you? The Penang Todi is not in quality. But this Setiawan Todi makes me fall in love with it….hahaha

亚二饭菜 is in this Kedai Kopi Kwai Lok. Since we’ve tried several times of Tauge Chicken around Ipoh Town, so me decided to try new things…

And we saw this store with a big wording sign just opp the Lou Wong Tauge Chicken…and then we discovered some interesting menu which wrote under the Store name….lets take a look

opp the Lou Wong Tauge Chicken…did u see the signboard behind?

Wow, is an Exotic Menu which we rarely find….Chinese Herbal Lamb Soup, Sour Trotter, ….

Well since we have this change to come to ipoh…and lets try the Exotic Special!
We’ve ordered 4 dishes, Herbal Lamb Soup, Ginger and Spring Onion Stir Fry Intestine, Stir Fry Claim and a Vegetable.

Although i have never try kind of soup before, but i tell you what, this is terribly good! They cooked the lamb ribs in the Chinese Herbal Soup…. and it taste wonderful. the herbal soup goes very well with the lamb ribs, thus the rack meat was very tender and smooth in texture. Yum Yum..

Rating: 4 / 5 (Highly Recommended)

Well, im sure this kind of Stir Fry Intestine is kinda new for penangite, so am i…hee. Try la, since we’ve chance…why not? lol
Did you see the intestine has cutted into round flower shape before? Very interesting presentation for the intestine itself. The pork intestine called 生肠 in chinese. We could taste that intestine was fresh and comes with a crunchy bite and easy to chew, but chinese wine is a little bit over. It is still taste exotic for us….hee, Im sure this will be a heaven dish for the intestime lovers!

Francis Western Food @ Pulau Tikus

Posted by gill gill On May - 2 - 20083 COMMENTS

Busy Street…

Bloggers, i just wonder what is so special about this Francis Western Food located in Pulau Tikus, right at the traffic light corner kopitiam. No harm to trying since many bloggers recommended this place. But I was disappointed about the cleanliness and hygiene of the owner and assistant. And their Service ain’t that friendly either.

3 big mistakes that should not be practices in the food industry, please take a look:

Mistake 1
I saw the Potato Serving spatula fell on to the floor, and without cleaning it the assistant used that same spatula to plate the potatoes for serving. It is not acceptable! WTF!! The plate that he was plating was mine, thus I quickly told my husband, and he asked the man to leave out the potatoes. They still didn’t realized their mistake and kept using the dirty spatula to serve for others….gee. Luckily i saw the whole picture, if not my husband would have diarrhea again as he is sensitive to dirty food stuff. Very effective cleanliness meter. hahaha…..

Mistake 2
They use plastic Tupperware to hit up the potatoes in the microwave!!! Guys, no matter is microwave prove or non microwave prove, it shouldn’t be use plastic in the microwave instead! Well, that potatoes is not only unhygienic, but is cancer potatoes as well!!!!!

Mistake 3
They use Ice Cream Box to store the curry paste. Well, Ice Cream box is meant for cool ice cream and non acidic food stuff. Try keeping curry paste or chili in a plastic container and see the difference after a while! Do you think the curry is not acidic enough to spoil plastic container structure and lining? Cancer in through your mouth.

Hygiene, proper storage and cleanliness knowledge is very much important in the food industry, it affect others health!

Sirloin Steak

Coming back to the food, I didn’t find anything special about the food that we had except that the portion is fair on the price they charged. My hubby had the sirloin steak cooked medium which at first was nice in presentation, but upon munching on it the admiration turned into hate. The fats were not cooked enough and it did not caramelised to produce the fragrant aroma of the beef. And between the fats and the meat, it was damned chewy. If considering the meat part, it is still okay only. Actually they shouldnt put pineapple n fry button mushroom as one of the side dish. the taste totally doesnt match either.

Rating 1.5 / 5

Moroccan Fish

Then to the Moroccan baked fish. The fish was overwhelmed by all the sauce and dressing, making hard to differentiate the taste of fish and the other side dishes. Basically, I felt like eating mayo or cream.

Rating: 1.5 / 5

Spicy Chicken

Then there was the Spicy Chicken that we had. The chicken was baked together with all the topping and the curry gravy, which made the chicken soggy. From my opinion, they could have placed the topping(pineapple, peach, capsicum) on the base, baked for a while then placed the chicken on top then baked again. This would make the topping caramelised with it own sweetness, transferring the aroma of topping to chicken and browning the chicken to create a fragrant chicken piece. After then, dress the dish with the curry gravy. That would be how I would prepare the Spicy Chicken.
Rating: 1.5 / 5

Not doubt the butter bread taste good. The Butter Bread is soft and moist in the center and skin is crispy. Other then the bread, all side dishes are out.
Rating: 3 / 5

Service: 1 / 5
Environtment: Damn HOT

Anyway, I hope they will improve on their hygiene, cleanliness, service and cooking skills.
