Hunting For The Flavors & Texture Of Yesteryears'

Archive for June, 2008

This is my second visits to Yut Kee, and i believe Yut Kee is a Famous old school hainanese food paradise for KL people. Its located in the heart of the city. You will hardly get a table and the people who comes here already used to shares table with stranger.

Their Popular dishes are Hainanese Pork Chop, Roti Bakar with Homemade Kaya and many more…

Hainanese Pork Chop

At first my sister in-law asked me don’t order the pork chop, afraid the meat will be tough, coz she took that before and was hard to chewed. Anyway, i still asked for 1…hee.

The pork chop deep fried with egg batter, served with deep fried potatoes, mixed vege and stew sauce. That is call Hainanese Style.

Surprisingly the pork chop was tender, the sauce is average only. Well, for me, it isn’t the old school & homey method that i expected. I guess they force to prepared the food in short cuts to supplies the huge crowds. The mama stew sauce is to caramelise the onion, pan fried the potatoes and put in some tomatoes to make the delicious stew sauce.

Roti bakar become Toast….no more charcoal version now, but the kaya still using old school “double boiled” method to cook. Nice.

Another recommend item is Seafood Dai Lok Mee, freshly fry. Remember don’t ask for normal version, coz they pre-cook the noodle and just hit up when the order comes. Crappy…

Post Kuchai Lama Food blog again?!…haaa, this place is very near to my sister in-law house, only 10 min driving distance. I am sure there are lots of food maniac spend 2 hours on the road just only for a plate of ipoh tauge chicken!

Anyway, two of us decided to have an early lunch at 11am (consider brunch), and came to Mooi Mooi Coffee Shop to enjoy the popular Roast Pork and Char Siew. While we arrive, the piping hot Roast Pork and Chicken just came out from the kitchen, oil is still dripping down the tray.

Although still early, but the stall already have few tables and take away order to make. Our meal served on the table after 30 min later….gee, the owner missed out our order….#%$Y^

Rice came with yellowish color

Roast Chicken Meat and Chicken Kidney.

The roast chicken skin looks delicious, unfortunately i just can taste the flavour from the skin….the meat is tasteless.

Mouth Watering Char Siew…so kilat

Crunchy Roast Pork

Although the skin is crunchy, but the meat is abit too dry and taste the saltiness only, some of the meat & oil were separates…how come? the pork not fresh?

KL Trip (May) Part 3 – Soon Lei @ Kuchai Lama, KL

Posted by gill gill On June - 7 - 20084 COMMENTS

Lunch Time again! My sister in-law brough me out for early lunch at Ku Chai Lama area, and she called her friend to get the direction and make sure we go to the correct shop :)

Here we came to the Soon Lei Coffee Shop which was after the 林记 (posted KL Trip Part 1), 4 junctions away.

My sister in-law brought me here was for the Fish Head Bee Hoon. And we asked the waitress what is their specialty, and she introduced Fish Head Bee Hoon, Pumpkim Bee Hoon to us. Well, sounds interesting when i heard Pumpkin Bee Hoon. So, we decided to order 1 small bowl of Fish Head Bee Hoon, and Pumpkin Bee Hoon for 2. And follow by the 沙梨酸梅. I’m abit confused, and asked her, 沙梨酸梅 or Umpra酸梅…and she answered me is 沙梨酸梅. Ok, another interesting drinks….so we ordered 2 glasses.

沙梨酸梅
Well, it is really confused me when come to first try. Its really taste Umpra to me…..HAAA. probably KL people called it in different name…
Taste sharp and the juice in thin flavor, not as smooth as penang version.

Pumpkin Bee Hoon
It looks good to me, come with mouth watering presentation. The Bee Hoon mixed evently with Pumpkin and some prawn, dried shrimp, minced meat. I was impressed when put it into my mouth, there are more then a pumpkin flavour and that is salted eggs! Both flavour were blended so well and its truly make the perfection!

Rating: 4 /5 (must try)

Fish Head Bee Hoon
At first, we didnt expect it came with Claypot, my sister in-law saids, not much people using claypot for serving. Probably the chef wish the claypot can keep the bee hoon warm and last for more longer.
It came with a medium size of claypot with Fish Head Bee Hoon, and that is so called smallest size. Well, this is a milky version with salted vegetables, fish head with big chunck of meat. The only differrent from the others is Tofu & Yam in it, and Its make me feel like eating old school food.

Tofu & Yam from the Fish Head Bee Hoon
Although they dump in the Tofu & Yam to enhance the soup flavour, but i found it was abit heavy after taken all ingredient together. The Bee Hoon itself pretty smooth and springy, and soup taste moderate to high. The Claypot coudnt help much on keeping warm, as its came was fire hot, but was cooling down very fast. Probably the clay quality isnt good. Temperiture affected the taste, as everyone knows the fish head only good to consume when is hot.

This time i finally can met up with my best buddy and she brought me to Bak Kut Teh Restaurant Name Yee Heong, just opposite her office at puchong area. But we went there for Chicken Feet & other dishes, not Bak kut teh…heheee…

The restaurant is a corner unit of a row of shop houses. My friend told me that usually here will be pack during lunch & dinner hour. Luckily we went there at around 6pm before the crowd coming in.

eeh….they has been published…see the framed news paper hanging on the wall?

ooo…here the chicken feet comes…we ordered the big portion for just only 2 of us! My friend Annie asked for Yui Char Kui (油炸鬼) and soak it into the sauce….waaaaa….she really knows how to eat….no wonder we both can get fat so fast…..ahahahah

The Chicken Feet skin was so smooth (without frying), the tendent was very tender, it was full of dark soy sauce aroma, containing some mild herbal taste, and it gave the dish that extra body and texture….

Price: RM12 (big portion)

This Hakka Pork Belly & Yam (竽头扣肉) is presentable, but not the taste.

Price: RM10 (Small)
Rating: 2.5 / 5

Ooo…Sour Vege Soup (酸菜汤 / 一品窝),its come with vege only, nothing much in it. Kinda tasty, not too soury, you can taste some sweetness in there….i bet you can eat 2 bowls of large rice with this dish….yum yum

Price: RM6 (Small)
Rating: 3.5 / 5

Steam Egg…this dish are really impressed me. Just only a steam egg and they can do it so well. it was so smooth could just slide down your throat, smoother then Tou Fu Far (soy bean custurd), excellent! The light soy sauce enhanced the egg flavour and complemented the dish…..i’m loving it!

Price: RM6 (Small)
Rating: 4.5 / 5 (must try)

The Yee Heong Restaurant

What i recommand to you is, dont go for their bak kut teh, go for above food that we took is safer…

We paid RM38 for the total bill of 2 person’s meal….i think the price is cheap in KL…issit?
