Gourmet Garden

Hunting For The Flavors & Texture Of Yesteryears'

Chinese Food

It was our first time meeting people who share the same passion on food. In the past we have met many who are makan kings & queens, who only know where to look for food but doesn’t really know how to enjoy food. But then beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, ones gourmet dish may be another ones poison.

It was an enjoyable night to remember with Penang Tua Pui (but compare to me they are still short of a few kilos), Lingzie, CK Lam, Buzzingbe, Cariso and Criz Lai. There will be more gatherings in plan and we hope that more will join in to make the occasion merrier.
Lets get back to the food at Hainan Town at the Queens St. Pier. It was our first visit there and we did not know what to expect, but as food adventurers we went on to see what was cooking there. Basically we had 5 dishes that would be signature dishes of any Nyonya restaurant, except for the mix vegetable, spring rolls(nyonya style), inchi kabin, Jiu Hu Char, Asam Fish. Imagine with the 5 dishes, white rice and drinks(no liqueur), it was a whopping RM190+. And honestly, I had to go for second round with Gill as the portions were insufficient. Damn! The blades were sharpen on both sides, si peh tai tao.
The photo we’ve took were not up to standard…pai seh, please dont put high expectation on the DSLR…coz we are still new :P

The first dish to be serve was the Spring Rolls, it was a bit over fried and oily. The complementary sauce that is norm for this kind spring rolls were also not up to par, it was dead sour and lacks the earthy and smoky taste. If one could remember when Hollywood Restaurant at Tg. Bungah, during their hey days, their Spring Rolls were fried to perfection and serve with the special sauce, which brings out the sweetness of the fillings and also eliminates the oiliness feeling that comes with deep fried food.

Food Taste: 5

Next was the Inchi Kabin. My first impression was charcoal chicken because it was so black and doesn’t resemble any Inchi Kabin i have tried before. I can’t really remember how Ichi Kabin should taste like but definitely this is not Inchi Kabin. Although the chicken looks well done but yet Penang Tua Pui complaint that theirs were not cooked, my drum stick was over cooked and hard. I wonder did the cook stir the chicken when it was being fried!
Food Taste: 4
The Jiu Hu Char taste common, but the texture was coarse may be due to that the turnips(sengkuang) were shredded using a shredder rather that being hand cut.

Food Taste: 5

The Asam Fish, tasted blend, no heat and no fragrant from the Curry Flower. The significant taste was sour and sweet with a tiny hint pineapple. It will suit those who can’t take spicy food, like MAT SALLEHs.
Food Taste: 4
No comments on mixed vegetable as it was common and taste so so only.
Food Taste: 5

After the main course, we had dessert made by Buzzingbee, tarts bought by Criz and a birthday cake prepared by Lingzie for Cariso. Those were the only high lights for the night. The main courses were a bit disappointing.

i love the black papper tarlets among 3 of them…(top right, dark in color). If you would like to know where to get those tarlets, please visit crizfood.blogspot.com for more info.
Here comes the tiny “Virgin” fruit tarts prepared by BuzzingBee from her homy kitcken :) This is her first experiment and yet the quality can fight with those who make for living :P ~
The Tart overall is ok, but just the fruit cant stand too long on the pastry and color start to changed, luckily she put choclate as base to avoid the water comes out from the fruits…or else, will become a fruit cake…hehehe…Clever! Way to go BuzzingBee!
Cake cutting time. Lingzie bought this Greentea Cake from Ritz for Cariso’s Birthday. The cake has mill greentea taste + redbean paste for several layers…
This defenately is a healthy cake…you can only taste the orignal sweetness from the ingrediant. pretty good.
Ladies were busy to snapped the best shot!
from Left to the Right – BuzzingBee, Lingzie, CK Lam, Cariso

HAPPY BIRTHDAY CARISO!

Hey, seems sweet looking at the Greentea Cake? Or think about something else? lol
A point to remember, next gathering remember to ask for a plate warmer! All were busy taking photos for their bloggs by the time we all set down, the dishes were already unsaveble, 991 also can’t help. haaaa…

Way back from KL, we dropped by tambum for our dinner. This time we decided to explore a new seafood restaurant in Tambun.

Crossing by those seafood restaurant, several of them were holding wedding functions. Probably is a good wedding month, day?! “ding dong tiang”…at the end, we choose this Restoran Floating.

At first we just thought that Restoran Floating is just only a name, but when we stepped on it, we only realise the whole restaurant its really floating on the big fish pound! We couldn’t see much what was surrounding the restaurant, cause it already dark on the night.

Hoy Tin Lau @ Ipoh, Perak

Posted by gill gill On July - 19 - 20084 COMMENTS

This is my second trip to Pangkor, not for holiday, but is to attend Jason’s relative wedding ceremony instead. We decided to visit our friend in Ipoh, when on the way down to Pangkor. So I’ve done my homework – to hunt for ipoh food among the food blogs, or else we will miss ipoh food again!…heee.

Hurray! I’ve finally found one interesting & mouthwatering food, is “Sar Keong Chicken” from Hoy Tin Lau were posted by Motormouth – Ipoh food blogger (j2kfm.blogspot.com). The chicken looks delicious, and we both agreed to go for it! So we contacted our local friend and ask for direction.

We nearly lost the opportunity, because we arrived ipoh were almost 2pm – noon session is going to close soon. We faster called up our friend and asked her go to “Hoy Tin Lau” and checked were they still open at that time.

Lucky! We were the second last table before the kitchen close. After the “Rush Hour”, is time to enjoy the food!

Before we start to the food topic, I have to mentioned about the waitress (probably is the ladyboss) was not friendly, black face indeed. Little rude in the way asking for the order. When ever we faced this situation…we will show our black face too… In Chinese called ” 以牙还牙”… lol

Hello, we pay for the food ok?! We are not begging you! Just wondering why, do they really understand how to operate a food business? How would your customer feels, and will they come back again? At the end, who loss?

Anyway, don’t care la…just enjoy the food to release our tention. Let see, what we’ve ordered…

Sar Keong Chicken “沙姜鸡”
The chicken lightly roasted in golden color, served with churchy jelly fish and a plate of finely chopped Sar Keong (a type of ginger). The meat is tender but its abit salty. Remember to eat it with the Sar Keong, or else you won’t taste the different with other roasted chicken….lol. And I don’t feel the jelly fish is a good combination for this dish. The soury covered the chicken taste. Although is special, but the Jellyfish is not a necessary item to put into it. I personally would prefer how would the Sar Keong taste better for the chicken. The Sar Keong couldn’t plays the part, its because it was finely chopped only. I would suggest the best way to prepare the Sar Keong is to finely chop and mash, marinate in oil OR lightly sauté in oil to bring the sar keong flavour out. From there you can get the strongger Sar Keong taste.

Food Taste: 6.5

3 Yolks Steam Egg “三黄蛋”
A normal plate of steam egg….and was below par! Their eggs is over cooked and tasteless.
Food Taste: 4

Stir Fry Mixed Vege “清炒杂菜”
Oh, their vege has mixed with asparagus and celery, can taste Chinese wine and wok hei. Not bad.
Food Taste: 6

Claypot Goose Feet cook with Salted Fish “咸鱼鹅掌煲”
I doubt that was goose feet, i’d rather believe it is duck feet instead. The sauce is quite alright, but there is nothing you can suck from the feet! Did you see the picture? All is TULANG! Pretty tought and hard to pulled the skin out from the feet, at the end, we surrendered! just to suck the sauce from the feet!!!! It was damn expensive (RM20+) and ate nothing…$#%$%&^ pretty unhappy with this dish.

This is my second visits to Yut Kee, and i believe Yut Kee is a Famous old school hainanese food paradise for KL people. Its located in the heart of the city. You will hardly get a table and the people who comes here already used to shares table with stranger.

Their Popular dishes are Hainanese Pork Chop, Roti Bakar with Homemade Kaya and many more…

Hainanese Pork Chop

At first my sister in-law asked me don’t order the pork chop, afraid the meat will be tough, coz she took that before and was hard to chewed. Anyway, i still asked for 1…hee.

The pork chop deep fried with egg batter, served with deep fried potatoes, mixed vege and stew sauce. That is call Hainanese Style.

Surprisingly the pork chop was tender, the sauce is average only. Well, for me, it isn’t the old school & homey method that i expected. I guess they force to prepared the food in short cuts to supplies the huge crowds. The mama stew sauce is to caramelise the onion, pan fried the potatoes and put in some tomatoes to make the delicious stew sauce.

Roti bakar become Toast….no more charcoal version now, but the kaya still using old school “double boiled” method to cook. Nice.

Another recommend item is Seafood Dai Lok Mee, freshly fry. Remember don’t ask for normal version, coz they pre-cook the noodle and just hit up when the order comes. Crappy…

Post Kuchai Lama Food blog again?!…haaa, this place is very near to my sister in-law house, only 10 min driving distance. I am sure there are lots of food maniac spend 2 hours on the road just only for a plate of ipoh tauge chicken!

Anyway, two of us decided to have an early lunch at 11am (consider brunch), and came to Mooi Mooi Coffee Shop to enjoy the popular Roast Pork and Char Siew. While we arrive, the piping hot Roast Pork and Chicken just came out from the kitchen, oil is still dripping down the tray.

Although still early, but the stall already have few tables and take away order to make. Our meal served on the table after 30 min later….gee, the owner missed out our order….#%$Y^

Rice came with yellowish color

Roast Chicken Meat and Chicken Kidney.

The roast chicken skin looks delicious, unfortunately i just can taste the flavour from the skin….the meat is tasteless.

Mouth Watering Char Siew…so kilat

Crunchy Roast Pork

Although the skin is crunchy, but the meat is abit too dry and taste the saltiness only, some of the meat & oil were separates…how come? the pork not fresh?

KL Trip (May) Part 3 – Soon Lei @ Kuchai Lama, KL

Posted by gill gill On June - 7 - 20084 COMMENTS

Lunch Time again! My sister in-law brough me out for early lunch at Ku Chai Lama area, and she called her friend to get the direction and make sure we go to the correct shop :)

Here we came to the Soon Lei Coffee Shop which was after the 林记 (posted KL Trip Part 1), 4 junctions away.

My sister in-law brought me here was for the Fish Head Bee Hoon. And we asked the waitress what is their specialty, and she introduced Fish Head Bee Hoon, Pumpkim Bee Hoon to us. Well, sounds interesting when i heard Pumpkin Bee Hoon. So, we decided to order 1 small bowl of Fish Head Bee Hoon, and Pumpkin Bee Hoon for 2. And follow by the 沙梨酸梅. I’m abit confused, and asked her, 沙梨酸梅 or Umpra酸梅…and she answered me is 沙梨酸梅. Ok, another interesting drinks….so we ordered 2 glasses.

Well, it is really confused me when come to first try. Its really taste Umpra to me…..HAAA. probably KL people called it in different name…
Taste sharp and the juice in thin flavor, not as smooth as penang version.

Rating: 2 /5

Pumpkin Bee Hoon
It looks good to me, come with mouth watering presentation. The Bee Hoon mixed evently with Pumpkin and some prawn, dried shrimp, minced meat. I was impressed when put it into my mouth, there are more then a pumpkin flavour and that is salted eggs! Both flavour were blended so well and its truly make the perfection!

Rating: 4 /5 (must try)

Fish Head Bee Hoon
At first, we didnt expect it came with Claypot, my sister in-law saids, not much people using claypot for serving. Probably the chef wish the claypot can keep the bee hoon warm and last for more longer.
It came with a medium size of claypot with Fish Head Bee Hoon, and that is so called smallest size. Well, this is a milky version with salted vegetables, fish head with big chunck of meat. The only differrent from the others is Tofu & Yam in it, and Its make me feel like eating old school food.

Tofu & Yam from the Fish Head Bee Hoon
Although they dump in the Tofu & Yam to enhance the soup flavour, but i found it was abit heavy after taken all ingredient together. The Bee Hoon itself pretty smooth and springy, and soup taste moderate to high. The Claypot coudnt help much on keeping warm, as its came was fire hot, but was cooling down very fast. Probably the clay quality isnt good. Temperiture affected the taste, as everyone knows the fish head only good to consume when is hot.

This time i finally can met up with my best buddy and she brought me to Bak Kut Teh Restaurant Name Yee Heong, just opposite her office at puchong area. But we went there for Chicken Feet & other dishes, not Bak kut teh…heheee…

The restaurant is a corner unit of a row of shop houses. My friend told me that usually here will be pack during lunch & dinner hour. Luckily we went there at around 6pm before the crowd coming in.

eeh….they has been published…see the framed news paper hanging on the wall?

ooo…here the chicken feet comes…we ordered the big portion for just only 2 of us! My friend Annie asked for Yui Char Kui (油炸鬼) and soak it into the sauce….waaaaa….she really knows how to eat….no wonder we both can get fat so fast…..ahahahah

The Chicken Feet skin was so smooth (without frying), the tendent was very tender, it was full of dark soy sauce aroma, containing some mild herbal taste, and it gave the dish that extra body and texture….

Price: RM12 (big portion)
Rating: 4 / 5

This Hakka Pork Belly & Yam (竽头扣肉) is presentable, but not the taste.

Price: RM10 (Small)
Rating: 2.5 / 5

Ooo…Sour Vege Soup (酸菜汤 / 一品窝),its come with vege only, nothing much in it. Kinda tasty, not too soury, you can taste some sweetness in there….i bet you can eat 2 bowls of large rice with this dish….yum yum

Price: RM6 (Small)
Rating: 3.5 / 5

Steam Egg…this dish are really impressed me. Just only a steam egg and they can do it so well. it was so smooth could just slide down your throat, smoother then Tou Fu Far (soy bean custurd), excellent! The light soy sauce enhanced the egg flavour and complemented the dish…..i’m loving it!

Price: RM6 (Small)
Rating: 4.5 / 5 (must try)

The Yee Heong Restaurant

What i recommand to you is, dont go for their bak kut teh, go for above food that we took is safer…

We paid RM38 for the total bill of 2 person’s meal….i think the price is cheap in KL…issit?

This is our second visits. You will never notice this place if you do not familiar with this area. Lucikly my Sister n Brother in-law who lived in KL bring us to many good food. What we remember their food was tasty. And that was for supper meal.

But ends up it dissapoint us because of their Peak Dinner Hour.

Here comes the Bitter gourd stir fried with glass noodle.

Stir evenly…

A very big different from what we had last trip. Last time we had the same bitter gourd glass noodle was pretty delicious and the glass noodle texture was so nice. And this time, noodle color abit lighter and looks dried, lack of moist. The taste doesnt up to expectation, everage only.
Lastime Rating: 3.5 / 5
Current Rating: 2.5 / 5

Dai Lok Mee

Did you see the crispy pork lard on top of the noodle?…haha, without the lard aroma, the noodle would go salty if you just take the noodle only.
Rating: 2.5 / 5

Hakka stir frying kuih, dunno how to call in english….haha, can anybody tell me? It was splendid for 1st visit, but not this time. Totally different taste, and even the Kuih texture and yam filling is not right. we were like eating bunch of flour and yam together in the mouth. Feel full very fast, and the mood turns down.

Previous visits has the deep fried crunchy dried shrimp fried with thick aromatic sauce and chewy Kuih, its was delicious and flavourfull.

Probably the golden hour affectted the quality. Well, what i can recommend is, go for supper time, around 10pm onward, should be better i think.

We asked the lady worker why the quality so different from lastime, and she said probably is the peak hour. and she mentioned that the Kuih is done by the owner’s son (kuih used to made by owner), new learner…no wonder the kuih qulity were so bad.

Meat Dumpling Yam Cake @ Cintra Street, Penang

Dumpling Shop at Cintra Street…

The Father handed the business to his son, and become 2nd generation business.

They specialist on X-Large Rice Dumpling. I dont have the Rice Dumpling picture here, and the rice dumpling is used to be good, but not now anymore. The second genetation dumpling is really dissapoint me. The glutinous rice inside the dumpling is too soft and tasteless. Totally OUT!!! So we rather dont eat. Their Red Bean Dessert aint good.

Big tray of Yam Cake…

The Yam Cake is not a special deal, it is tasteless and dont feel like eating yam cake, like eating flour! but the Sweet Sauce would helps alot on it, the sauce is thick, lots of sesami seeds and aromatic.
Totally counldnt compare this with his father’s.

This place is quite deep in, you need to came in from the setiawan town, and 15min driving and come to this Kampung. You should get a local to bring you there, Cause we also dunno how to go…haaaa. anyway, if you interested to go there, just ask from us, maybe we’ll find the way…

Wow, Meaty Baked Crab…
It was Fresh Fresh Fresh! as you can see in the picture, shape looks tough and in wonderful red color. Pure Bake Method is the best way to taste the fresh crab, you can taste the sweetness and baked aroma from the meats……perfect baked!!

I am fighting with the Crab! Haa
They are not only sell seafood, but Todi too. Todi is kind of natural wine which made by Coconut Flower’s juice. Hey, the Todi has a coconut juice aroma and it is smooth and round. even a kid can drink it too….

Although i have never try kind of soup before, but i tell you what, this is terribly good! They cooked the lamb ribs in the Chinese Herbal Soup…. and it taste wonderful. the herbal soup goes very well with the lamb ribs, thus the rack meat was very tender and smooth in texture. Yum Yum..

Tambun Seafood Restaurant @ Tambun

Sunday 30 July 06

Tambun Seafood Restaurant ( From Tambun toll, after traffic light first right corner junction restaurant) Tambun,Penang。

5.烘“Chi Lay”
Satay

Star View @ Megamall
Prai,Penang。

Ermmm…

Cintra Street

Georgetown,Penang Island。
