Hunting For The Flavors & Texture Of Yesteryears'

Cuisines

Cuisines of different regions and variations

This is my second visits to Yut Kee, and i believe Yut Kee is a Famous old school hainanese food paradise for KL people. Its located in the heart of the city. You will hardly get a table and the people who comes here already used to shares table with stranger.

Their Popular dishes are Hainanese Pork Chop, Roti Bakar with Homemade Kaya and many more…

Hainanese Pork Chop

At first my sister in-law asked me don’t order the pork chop, afraid the meat will be tough, coz she took that before and was hard to chewed. Anyway, i still asked for 1…hee.

The pork chop deep fried with egg batter, served with deep fried potatoes, mixed vege and stew sauce. That is call Hainanese Style.

Surprisingly the pork chop was tender, the sauce is average only. Well, for me, it isn’t the old school & homey method that i expected. I guess they force to prepared the food in short cuts to supplies the huge crowds. The mama stew sauce is to caramelise the onion, pan fried the potatoes and put in some tomatoes to make the delicious stew sauce.

Roti bakar become Toast….no more charcoal version now, but the kaya still using old school “double boiled” method to cook. Nice.

Another recommend item is Seafood Dai Lok Mee, freshly fry. Remember don’t ask for normal version, coz they pre-cook the noodle and just hit up when the order comes. Crappy…

Post Kuchai Lama Food blog again?!…haaa, this place is very near to my sister in-law house, only 10 min driving distance. I am sure there are lots of food maniac spend 2 hours on the road just only for a plate of ipoh tauge chicken!

Anyway, two of us decided to have an early lunch at 11am (consider brunch), and came to Mooi Mooi Coffee Shop to enjoy the popular Roast Pork and Char Siew. While we arrive, the piping hot Roast Pork and Chicken just came out from the kitchen, oil is still dripping down the tray.

Although still early, but the stall already have few tables and take away order to make. Our meal served on the table after 30 min later….gee, the owner missed out our order….#%$Y^

Rice came with yellowish color

Roast Chicken Meat and Chicken Kidney.

The roast chicken skin looks delicious, unfortunately i just can taste the flavour from the skin….the meat is tasteless.

Mouth Watering Char Siew…so kilat

Crunchy Roast Pork

Although the skin is crunchy, but the meat is abit too dry and taste the saltiness only, some of the meat & oil were separates…how come? the pork not fresh?

KL Trip (May) Part 3 – Soon Lei @ Kuchai Lama, KL

Posted by gill gill On June - 7 - 20084 COMMENTS

Lunch Time again! My sister in-law brough me out for early lunch at Ku Chai Lama area, and she called her friend to get the direction and make sure we go to the correct shop :)

Here we came to the Soon Lei Coffee Shop which was after the 林记 (posted KL Trip Part 1), 4 junctions away.

My sister in-law brought me here was for the Fish Head Bee Hoon. And we asked the waitress what is their specialty, and she introduced Fish Head Bee Hoon, Pumpkim Bee Hoon to us. Well, sounds interesting when i heard Pumpkin Bee Hoon. So, we decided to order 1 small bowl of Fish Head Bee Hoon, and Pumpkin Bee Hoon for 2. And follow by the 沙梨酸梅. I’m abit confused, and asked her, 沙梨酸梅 or Umpra酸梅…and she answered me is 沙梨酸梅. Ok, another interesting drinks….so we ordered 2 glasses.

Well, it is really confused me when come to first try. Its really taste Umpra to me…..HAAA. probably KL people called it in different name…
Taste sharp and the juice in thin flavor, not as smooth as penang version.

Rating: 2 /5

Pumpkin Bee Hoon
It looks good to me, come with mouth watering presentation. The Bee Hoon mixed evently with Pumpkin and some prawn, dried shrimp, minced meat. I was impressed when put it into my mouth, there are more then a pumpkin flavour and that is salted eggs! Both flavour were blended so well and its truly make the perfection!

Rating: 4 /5 (must try)

Fish Head Bee Hoon
At first, we didnt expect it came with Claypot, my sister in-law saids, not much people using claypot for serving. Probably the chef wish the claypot can keep the bee hoon warm and last for more longer.
It came with a medium size of claypot with Fish Head Bee Hoon, and that is so called smallest size. Well, this is a milky version with salted vegetables, fish head with big chunck of meat. The only differrent from the others is Tofu & Yam in it, and Its make me feel like eating old school food.

Tofu & Yam from the Fish Head Bee Hoon
Although they dump in the Tofu & Yam to enhance the soup flavour, but i found it was abit heavy after taken all ingredient together. The Bee Hoon itself pretty smooth and springy, and soup taste moderate to high. The Claypot coudnt help much on keeping warm, as its came was fire hot, but was cooling down very fast. Probably the clay quality isnt good. Temperiture affected the taste, as everyone knows the fish head only good to consume when is hot.

This time i finally can met up with my best buddy and she brought me to Bak Kut Teh Restaurant Name Yee Heong, just opposite her office at puchong area. But we went there for Chicken Feet & other dishes, not Bak kut teh…heheee…

The restaurant is a corner unit of a row of shop houses. My friend told me that usually here will be pack during lunch & dinner hour. Luckily we went there at around 6pm before the crowd coming in.

eeh….they has been published…see the framed news paper hanging on the wall?

ooo…here the chicken feet comes…we ordered the big portion for just only 2 of us! My friend Annie asked for Yui Char Kui (油炸鬼) and soak it into the sauce….waaaaa….she really knows how to eat….no wonder we both can get fat so fast…..ahahahah

The Chicken Feet skin was so smooth (without frying), the tendent was very tender, it was full of dark soy sauce aroma, containing some mild herbal taste, and it gave the dish that extra body and texture….

Price: RM12 (big portion)
Rating: 4 / 5

This Hakka Pork Belly & Yam (竽头扣肉) is presentable, but not the taste.

Price: RM10 (Small)
Rating: 2.5 / 5

Ooo…Sour Vege Soup (酸菜汤 / 一品窝),its come with vege only, nothing much in it. Kinda tasty, not too soury, you can taste some sweetness in there….i bet you can eat 2 bowls of large rice with this dish….yum yum

Price: RM6 (Small)
Rating: 3.5 / 5

Steam Egg…this dish are really impressed me. Just only a steam egg and they can do it so well. it was so smooth could just slide down your throat, smoother then Tou Fu Far (soy bean custurd), excellent! The light soy sauce enhanced the egg flavour and complemented the dish…..i’m loving it!

Price: RM6 (Small)
Rating: 4.5 / 5 (must try)

The Yee Heong Restaurant

What i recommand to you is, dont go for their bak kut teh, go for above food that we took is safer…

We paid RM38 for the total bill of 2 person’s meal….i think the price is cheap in KL…issit?

But ends up it dissapoint us because of their Peak Dinner Hour.

Here comes the Bitter gourd stir fried with glass noodle.

Stir evenly…

A very big different from what we had last trip. Last time we had the same bitter gourd glass noodle was pretty delicious and the glass noodle texture was so nice. And this time, noodle color abit lighter and looks dried, lack of moist. The taste doesnt up to expectation, everage only.

Dai Lok Mee

Did you see the crispy pork lard on top of the noodle?…haha, without the lard aroma, the noodle would go salty if you just take the noodle only.

Hakka stir frying kuih, dunno how to call in english….haha, can anybody tell me? It was splendid for 1st visit, but not this time. Totally different taste, and even the Kuih texture and yam filling is not right. we were like eating bunch of flour and yam together in the mouth. Feel full very fast, and the mood turns down.

Previous visits has the deep fried crunchy dried shrimp fried with thick aromatic sauce and chewy Kuih, its was delicious and flavourfull.

Probably the golden hour affectted the quality. Well, what i can recommend is, go for supper time, around 10pm onward, should be better i think.

We asked the lady worker why the quality so different from lastime, and she said probably is the peak hour. and she mentioned that the Kuih is done by the owner’s son (kuih used to made by owner), new learner…no wonder the kuih qulity were so bad.

Dumpling Shop at Cintra Street…

The Father handed the business to his son, and become 2nd generation business.

They specialist on X-Large Rice Dumpling. I dont have the Rice Dumpling picture here, and the rice dumpling is used to be good, but not now anymore. The second genetation dumpling is really dissapoint me. The glutinous rice inside the dumpling is too soft and tasteless. Totally OUT!!! So we rather dont eat. Their Red Bean Dessert aint good.

Big tray of Yam Cake…

The Yam Cake is not a special deal, it is tasteless and dont feel like eating yam cake, like eating flour! but the Sweet Sauce would helps alot on it, the sauce is thick, lots of sesami seeds and aromatic.
Totally counldnt compare this with his father’s.

Moonlight Cafe @ Batu Ferringhi, Penang

Posted by Jason Wong On May - 20 - 20082 COMMENTS

Moonlight Cafe – A Very Special Signage at the entrance, and you will not miss out this roadside Singage while on the way up along the winding road to batu ferringhi. The area name called Moonlight Bay, and currently have 2 new housing developments facing the moonlight cafe right after the miami beach. The Cafe signage lighten up the dark and busy street with cars but without a man walking. The entrance lead you to the long staircase and down to the beach. There are 2 seating areas; selter w seafront and sandy beach without selter. Well, due to the “Green” lighting putting up at the beach area, we uncomfortable with it, so we choosed the seltered area which near to the kitchen.

Moonlight Cafe is a good place for lovers to dine at the relaxing private beach. They are selling Malay’s Food which has usual Malay Chu Char Menu + Ikan and seafood bakar + Western Food.

Charcoal BBQ Sea Cockers…mMmmMMmm…is gill’s flavorites. The Cockers were slidly over cooked and come with the Thai Sweet Chili Sauce for dip. But i’d rather taste the original cocker flavour. The Cockers were freashly grill but its lack of the sea saltyness.

Teluk Dada…well, a simple egg and do it in thousand’s way. Teluk dada is not sunny or bulleye, but its a deep fried egg in large amount of hot oil. It makes a thin crispy outer layer and inner was tender and moist. That simple Teluk Dada was fullfil my desire…GOOD

Would this picture makes you feel hungry?…haha, it is quite tempting. Long time didnt have chance to makan mee goreng here, and this was the first visit in year 2008. Anyway, we were there for tea break and still have lots mee goreng supporters especially on weekend.
i always believe the taste and quality will be different before and after they get famous. Haa….

Do you know why? famous = more people eat your food, have to serve fast = mass production, so do u think this is the best still…lol

Well, come back to the food. The mee goreng standard doesnt taste as good as lastime, luckily they still kept the flavor, just only lack of some goreng aroma. when comes to peak hour lagi worst, they cooked the few plates of mee in one time, so where can get aroma still? the mee consider tasty still.

opp the Lou Wong Tauge Chicken…did u see the signboard behind?

Wow, is an Exotic Menu which we rarely find….Chinese Herbal Lamb Soup, Sour Trotter, ….

Well since we have this change to come to ipoh…and lets try the Exotic Special!
We’ve ordered 4 dishes, Herbal Lamb Soup, Ginger and Spring Onion Stir Fry Intestine, Stir Fry Claim and a Vegetable.

Although i have never try kind of soup before, but i tell you what, this is terribly good! They cooked the lamb ribs in the Chinese Herbal Soup…. and it taste wonderful. the herbal soup goes very well with the lamb ribs, thus the rack meat was very tender and smooth in texture. Yum Yum..

Well, im sure this kind of Stir Fry Intestine is kinda new for penangite, so am i…hee. Try la, since we’ve chance…why not? lol
Did you see the intestine has cutted into round flower shape before? Very interesting presentation for the intestine itself. The pork intestine called 生肠 in chinese. We could taste that intestine was fresh and comes with a crunchy bite and easy to chew, but chinese wine is a little bit over. It is still taste exotic for us….hee, Im sure this will be a heaven dish for the intestime lovers!

Francis Western Food @ Pulau Tikus

Posted by gill gill On May - 2 - 20083 COMMENTS

Busy Street…

Bloggers, i just wonder what is so special about this Francis Western Food located in Pulau Tikus, right at the traffic light corner kopitiam. No harm to trying since many bloggers recommended this place. But I was disappointed about the cleanliness and hygiene of the owner and assistant. And their Service ain’t that friendly either.

3 big mistakes that should not be practices in the food industry, please take a look:

Mistake 1
I saw the Potato Serving spatula fell on to the floor, and without cleaning it the assistant used that same spatula to plate the potatoes for serving. It is not acceptable! WTF!! The plate that he was plating was mine, thus I quickly told my husband, and he asked the man to leave out the potatoes. They still didn’t realized their mistake and kept using the dirty spatula to serve for others….gee. Luckily i saw the whole picture, if not my husband would have diarrhea again as he is sensitive to dirty food stuff. Very effective cleanliness meter. hahaha…..

Mistake 2
They use plastic Tupperware to hit up the potatoes in the microwave!!! Guys, no matter is microwave prove or non microwave prove, it shouldn’t be use plastic in the microwave instead! Well, that potatoes is not only unhygienic, but is cancer potatoes as well!!!!!

Mistake 3
They use Ice Cream Box to store the curry paste. Well, Ice Cream box is meant for cool ice cream and non acidic food stuff. Try keeping curry paste or chili in a plastic container and see the difference after a while! Do you think the curry is not acidic enough to spoil plastic container structure and lining? Cancer in through your mouth.

Hygiene, proper storage and cleanliness knowledge is very much important in the food industry, it affect others health!

Sirloin Steak

Coming back to the food, I didn’t find anything special about the food that we had except that the portion is fair on the price they charged. My hubby had the sirloin steak cooked medium which at first was nice in presentation, but upon munching on it the admiration turned into hate. The fats were not cooked enough and it did not caramelised to produce the fragrant aroma of the beef. And between the fats and the meat, it was damned chewy. If considering the meat part, it is still okay only. Actually they shouldnt put pineapple n fry button mushroom as one of the side dish. the taste totally doesnt match either.

Rating 1.5 / 5

Moroccan Fish

Then to the Moroccan baked fish. The fish was overwhelmed by all the sauce and dressing, making hard to differentiate the taste of fish and the other side dishes. Basically, I felt like eating mayo or cream.

Rating: 1.5 / 5

Spicy Chicken

Then there was the Spicy Chicken that we had. The chicken was baked together with all the topping and the curry gravy, which made the chicken soggy. From my opinion, they could have placed the topping(pineapple, peach, capsicum) on the base, baked for a while then placed the chicken on top then baked again. This would make the topping caramelised with it own sweetness, transferring the aroma of topping to chicken and browning the chicken to create a fragrant chicken piece. After then, dress the dish with the curry gravy. That would be how I would prepare the Spicy Chicken.
Rating: 1.5 / 5

Not doubt the butter bread taste good. The Butter Bread is soft and moist in the center and skin is crispy. Other then the bread, all side dishes are out.
Rating: 3 / 5

Service: 1 / 5
Environtment: Damn HOT

Anyway, I hope they will improve on their hygiene, cleanliness, service and cooking skills.

Khaleel Nasi Kandal @ Batu Ferringhi

Posted by gill gill On April - 30 - 20081 COMMENT

Finally Batu Ferringhi has a 24 hour Nasi Kandal! This Khaleel actually had a shop located at the Flat ground floor which and the flats are opposite the 7eleven, and they are open on day time only. And now they opened a branch at the corner shoplot (2 lots) at the 7eleven side, end of the road since begining of the year 2008.

We’ve tried their food for few times. Usually we will prefer to eat there at night, coz the night shift chef cook better then the morning! Haaa…

We would recommand you go for night time food, better taste. You can try their Roti Canai and ask for Dhal campur Sardine “Guah”. The roti is crispy outside and soft inside, and you can really taste the roti with some sweetness and fragrant, and the guah n roti combination goes really well.
Tips:Dont ask for fish curry, that will be taste different from what i’d recommanded.

I think the Pork Satay is hard to find in Penang, anyone who can recommend good pork satay?

At first, the pork n intestine satay presentation was tempting, but after the both item put into our mouth…i have to say over expectation. Although the satay put in the pork lard on each stick with some lean meat (it seems a perfect combination n portion for a yummy satay), smells great, but taste weird, dunno how to descript it, and the Satay Sauce is watery. doesnt help much. Tambun Seafood Restaurant ( From Tambun toll, after traffic light first right corner junction restaurant) Tambun,Penang。

5.烘“Chi Lay”
Satay

Saturday 30 July 06
12.30pm

Star View @ Megamall
Prai,Penang。

Ermmm…

Kulim’s Kelang Lama Laksa Ice Kacang

Posted by Jason Wong On September - 11 - 20061 COMMENT

People say that the best Laksa is in Penang. Is that true? I am not a fan of Laksa, but sad to say is that the standards in Penang are getting worse, and prices are shooting up like rockets. Many tourists seems to only patronize places which WERE ONCE legends or convenient. Good things does not come easy, you would really need to go ground level and sniff it out.

From my previous job in a shipping company, I got to know this joint in Kulim which serve Laksa and Ice Kacang. It is still not that commercialize yet till today. This place is in Kulim at Kelang Lama or in Hokkien, ‘Lau Hui Kar’. It will take you some driving around to reach there because the place is not in a shop lot or busy town area. It is in an old ‘kampung’ residential area.

The Laksa there is totally different from that sold in Penang. It is neither that sour nor spicy hot as you will find in most of the Laksa in Penang. It is more of the ‘sweetness’ of the fish and the side condiments that are add in before serving.

When you take the first sip of the soup, it is the sweetness of the fish which is the dominant taste that greets you. But if you take the time to savor the laksa soup before slurping the noodles, you will be surprise to fine a hint of cucumber infuse into the soup when the hot and steaming soup was poured into the bowl of white noodles or ‘nai fan’.

The only thing that I find disappointing about the laksa is the noodles that they are using. It is not smooth enough and some times tend to be a bit stiff. The ‘nai fan’ should be smooth, firm(but not stiff) and moist. If have tried the ‘nai fan’ in Ipoh, you would know what I am taking about.

To accompany the hot and steaming bowl laksa, definitely would be a bowl of icy cold Ice Kacang or shaved ice. Nothing fancy, no ice cream or cut fresh fruits, just your normal and almost traditional ice kacang. But what I find special about their ice kacang is their ice. The texture is very smooth and soft. Even the ice shavings from the famous Sow Tow Lane ice kacang stall could not compare.

Ice kacang or ice shavings, ‘ice’ is always in front, therefore the ice is very important. If the ice is not smooth, consistent and soft, then the ice kacang is not worth patronage. But that is not the end, the syrups and condiments are also very important too. I found that the peanuts in the ice kacang at this place are fresh and fragrant. Usually, I do not like to have peanuts in my ice kacang because the nuts are always burnt and dry, but for this place, I do not mind having more peanuts added to my ice kacang.

Other than the food is good there, the place is also well kept and clean. The owner has even found the time to modify some old plastic bottles to cover the chopsticks and spoons on each individual table. Tables are cleaned almost immediately after the customers pay-up and leave. People there are also quite polite and friendly too.

If you would like to try out this place, I wouldn’t mind showing the way to the place. Good things should be share and enjoy together.

Georgetown,Penang Island。
